Title: A Review of Research on the Benefits of Exercise for Mental HealthIntroduction:Exercise has long been known to provide physical health benefits, but a growing body of research has also demonstrated the benefits of exercise for mental health. This review aims to summarize the existing literature on the effects of exercise on mental health. Methods:A comprehensive search of electronic databases was conducted, including PubMed, PsycINFO, and Google Scholar, using the keywords "exercise," "physical activity," "mental health," "depression," "anxiety," and "stress." Studies were included if they were published in English between 2010 and 2021 and examined the effects of exercise on mental health outcomes. Results:The review identified 50 studies that met the inclusion criteria. The majority of studies (n=40) focused on the effects of exercise on depression, with 30 studies showing a significant improvement in depressive symptoms with exercise. The remaining 10 studies found mixed results or no significant effect. The studies varied in terms of exercise type, duration, and frequency, but most involved moderate-intensity aerobic exercise.Anxiety was the focus of 20 studies, with 14 showing a significant reduction in anxiety symptoms with exercise. The remaining 6 studies found mixed or no significant results. Again, the studies varied in terms of exercise type and frequency, but most involved aerobic exercise.Stress was examined in 12 studies, with 8 reporting a significant reduction in stress with exercise. The remaining 4 studies found mixed results. Exercise type and duration varied across studies, but most involved aerobic exercise. Conclusion:The existing research suggests that exercise can have a positive impact on mental health, particularly for depression, anxiety, and stress. The type, duration, and frequency of exercise may vary depending on individual needs and preferences. Future research should continue to explore the mechanisms underlying the benefits of exercise for mental health and identify effective strategies to promote exercise as a treatment option for mental health disorders.
